35 Best Songs For The Perfect 90s Playlist At Your Wedding

90s Nostaglia is in full force. Zack Morris. Friends. Tickle Me Elmo. Clueless. Forest Gump. And so much more. The 90s. If you lived through them, you remember all the glitter all over your face and fluffy scrunchies worn by Britney Spearsherself. Oh, and don't forget those beanie babies, Pokemon and the Macarena. Ouch! I know what you mean about that Macarena! Let's forget that song :) Actually, that's one of those songs that gets placed on the DO NOT PLAY LIST quite frequently. Music from the 90s is popping up all over, in commercials and in other areas of pop culture. AND in playlists for weddings all over the country. You'll want to read on for some wedding playlist inspiration with music from the 90s for your wedding playlist. 

I actually grew up in the 80s and graduated from high school in 1992, so I might be a little more partial to 80s music. As you listen to this list, take a walk, but don't forget to load up on all your favorite 90s boy bands in the Ipod like the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, and 98 Degrees and bring your fanny pack and beanie babes. Let this list take you back to a fun time in music and give you some ideas as you craft your perfect wedding reception list. Sprinkling some 90s hits into the playlist of your wedding will put a smile on your face, and maybe will make your playlist "all that and a bag of chips", especially if you add in a few clean old school hip hop tunes.  "Run Around" | Blues Traveler
I got to see Blues Travelers in Charleston back in the fall of 2009 at Joe Riley Park. They are a great band and this song would become one of their signature songs and one of the most popular of the 90s when it was released from the album Four in 1994. "Run Around" would peak at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995, and #2 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

"Hold My Hand" | Hootie & The Blowfish
Back during the summer of 1994, this little band who played around Charleston in the 80s and 90s, and in Columbia would go mainstream when the Cracked Rear View was released and would become one of the biggest selling records at that time. "Hold My Hand" would peak at #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #2 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. "Groove Is In The Heart" | Deelite
Back at the beginning of the 90s, there was so much amazing dance music all over the radio. Deee-Lite would release their album World Clique in the summer of 1990, and "Groove Is In The Heart" would be the first single to be released to radio.  The song would peak at #4 on the Hot 100 in early 1991.

 "Round & Round" | Tevin Campbell
Most hard core fans of Prince remember the movie Graffiti Bridge, released back in the fall of 1990. "Round & Round" would appear on the soundtrack and peak at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Smooth" | Santana With Rob Thomas
Back in the summer of 1999, Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas would collaborate on one of the catchiest songs of the year to wrap up the millenium. "Smooth" would be one of the most popular songs of the summer and would peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Top 40 chart.

 "Vogue" | Madonna
Because it's your wedding day and you should be able to strike a pose on the dance floor. Back in the spring of 1990, Madonna would release the album I'm Breathless, which was the soundtrack to the movie Dick Tracy. "Vogue" would be released in advance of the movie would hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"Rebirth Of Slick" | Digable Planets
Back in the early 90s, there was a jazz rap trio called the Diggable Planets who would release "Rebirth Of Slick" (Cool Like Dat). The song was released in the fall of 1992 and would peak at #15 in March of 1993.

  "Save Tonight" | Eagle Eye Cherry
Back in the fall of 1997, Eagle Eye Cherry would release his debut album Desireless. "Save Tonight" would peak at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"Jump Around" | House Of Pain
This classic song from 1992 is a heavy request favorite, even for modern brides and grooms.  Released in May of 1992, "Jump Around" peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also appears on my 40 Most Requested Songs For Your Wedding Playlist, feel free to click over after you flashback to the 90s.

"Here Comes The Hotstepper" | Ini Kamoze
Back in the summer of 1994, Ini Kamoze would release the title track from his album Here Comes The Hotstepper.  The song would peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is also featured on my Best Era Of Dance Music Volume 1 playlist.

 "Mambo #5" | Lou Bega
And I bet you thought that Lou Bega wrote and release Mambo #5 all by himself. Actually the song was written by as musician from Cuba Damado Perez Prado. Lou Bega would re-record the song in 1999 and score a Top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

 "Closing Time" | Semisonic
I'm not sure that back in the summer of 1998 that Semisonic knew that they would be recording and releasing a song that would become one of the more popular songs to end your wedding reception. "Closing Time" would top the Billboard Alternative Chart.

"Tubthumping" | Chumbawamba
Contrary to what I have heard a lot of other DJs say about "Tubthumping", I might be one of the rare wedding DJs who is not offended by the song. When the song hit radio in the fall of 1997, it had a sound like I had never heard before.  "Tubthumping" would peak at #6 on the Hot 100, but make it all the way to Number 1 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart. 

"Walking On The Sun" | Smashmouth

"This Is How We Do It" | Montel Jordan
If there were a countdown of the Top 10 most requested songs of the 90s, this banger by Montel Jordan would certainly be in the mix.  This first song to be released by Montel Jordan would become his signature song and peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It's a song that a lot of wedding DJs throw on to get the party started.  Brides and grooms and their guests still respond to it. 

"Gettin Jiggy With It" | Will Smith 
Back in 1997, Will Smith would release his first solo album Big Willie Style.  "Gettin Jiggy With It" would be released in January of 1998 and would make it all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

"U Can't Touch This" | MC Hammer
At the beginning of 1990, MC Hammer would release his album Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em, which featured his most successful song "U Can't Touch This". The song would eventually peak at #8 on the Hot 100 chart. 

"Jump" | Kris Kross
When you are on the dance floor and all your family and guests are crowded around you, I can think of no better time to "Jump". This #1 song from the winter of 1992 is the perfect 90s song to make you jump, and it also appears on my Songs That Make You Jump Playlist. "Ice Ice Baby" | Vanilla Ice
"Ice Ice Baby" is a song that people still respond to, no matter the age of your guests, whether they are young or old.  With the B side of the single being the cover of the 70s classic "Play That Funky Music", Vanilla Ice would release Ice Ice Baby in the late summer of 1990 and would peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

"Unbelievable" | EMF
Released in the spring of 1991, "Unbelievable" would reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in July of 1991, and would be one of the many songs you'll find on my 1991: Best Songs Of The 90s Playlist

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" | The Verve 
I've actually gotten a request to play this song as one of my clients were leaving their wedding reception as they got ready for their send off.  The song would peak at #4 on the Billboard Alternative chart. 

"Two Princes" | Spin Doctors
The Spin Doctors bursted onto the scene in 1992 with the release of their album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite.  "Two Princes"s would make it all the way to #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart, but my favorite song on the album is actually the song Jimmy Olsen's Blues. Look it up when you get a chance. 

"Too Close" | Next
This song actually reminds me that I still have to put together a 90s R&B playlist for weddings.  Released in the flal of 1997, "Too Close" would make it all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. 

"No Diggity" | Blackstreet
And we continue this playlist of some of the best 90s songs for your wedding with a little 90s hip-hop. "No Diggity" would reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B chart.

"Doo Wop (That Thing)" | Lauryn Hill
Lauryn would release The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill back in 1998 and would remain the only solo album she would record. "Doo Wop (That Thing)" would debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

"No Scrubs" | TLC
"No Scrubs" was released in February of 1999 off their album Fanmail.  The song would make it all the way to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B chart. You can also find this song on my 25 Best Songs For A Bachelorette Weekend playlist.

I Wanna Sex You Up" | Color Me Badd
Back in 1991, the movie New Jack City was released and this song was on the soundtrack. "I Wanna Sex You Up" would become one of the biggest songs of the year and would top at #2  on the Billboard Hot 100.

 "Mr. Jones" | Counting Crows
Their debut album was August And Everything After. It was released at the end of 1993 and would become a smash hit and one of their signature songs. "Mr Jones" became one of the most requested songs of the 90s  and would peak at #2 on the Billboard Alternative songs chart. 

"Baby One More Time" Britney Spears
Rolling Stone Magazine would name this song the greatest debut song of all time. I can still remember the first time I heard it on the radio or on Total Request Live with Carson Daly back in the fall of 1998. "Baby One More Time" would peak at #1 on the Hot 100 and Mainstream charts. 

"MMMBop" | Hanson
In the spring of 1997, there was a new boy band that was breaking on the radio. MMMBop was the first single to be released from their album Middle Of Nowhere and would peak at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Everybody [Backstreet's Back] | Backstreet Boys
Back in the summer of 1997, dance floors at every single wedding were being treated to what would become one of the top requests of the 90s.  While the song only topped at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, it remains a heavy favorite by modern brides and grooms.

"Baby Got Back" | Sir Mix Alot
While some people may frown about their wedding DJ throwing this song on, it's been my experience that it gets thrown (or requested for that matter) after the alcohol has had enough time to allow you to forget it ever got played. "Baby Got Back" was released in the spring of 1992 and would make it all the way to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

"Poison" | Bell Biv Devoe
"Poison" was released back in the winter of 1990 and would spend 70 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. The song would peak at #1 on June 1, 1990.

"One Week" | Barenaked Ladies
"One week" was the first single to be released from their album Stunt in the late summer of 1998. The song would peak at #1 on the Hot 100 and Alternative charts in the fall of 1998.

"I'm Too Sexy" | Right Said Fred
When I get around to putting together a great 90s One Hit Wonder Playlist for your wedding, this song is sure to be on it.  By January of 1992, everyone was doing the "catwalk" and "I'm Too Sexy" would top the Hot 100 and Hot Dance charts.
