About Mike Bills Entertainment
Mike Bills is determined to make your wedding day or event the best it can be from a musical standpoint. Mike grew up in the Summerville, SC area and still lives in that area. While he's not providing destination bride & grooms coming to Charleston, SC a great wedding DJ experience, he's manicuring his yard, walking the great Ravenel Bridge, working out to stay healthy, camping and more. Mike's passion for music began back in the early 1990s when he met a seasoned radio veteran Mitch Zatto.
The beginning of Mike's passion as a DJ began completely unexpectedly in the early portions of 1993. He met up with then 95SX / Fly 94 morning co-host Mitch Zatto. Mitch Zatto was quite the character with his Fractured Cubicle News. Zatto’s style and precise nature of producing imaging and spots and other production intrigued Mike about the radio business. What amazing fun could it be? To talk on the radio and play music! Mitch Zatto instilled in Mike that in order to be successful in radio, you needed to give people the “less is more” approach. He has brought this into his mobile DJ services as well. Mike still believes that to this day, he hasn’t met anyone with the work ethic as Mitch and is very thankful for that. The next thing Mike knew he was driving up to the old WSSP studios off Stephanie Dr in Goose Creek to watch Mitch in the morning on his Fly 94 morning show.
Developing The Passion
From 1993 – 1996, Mike got the luxury of interning with Mitch at various stations around town (WXTC-FM, WSSX-FM). Mitch helped Mike produce his first demo tape in the spring of 1996, but it wasn’t until 1997 that he got behind the microphone at WYBB (98.1FM). By the summer of 1999, Mike moved across the river to WRFQ and pounded out the classic rock for nearly 2 years. For the years of 2001 and 2002, Mike took a hiatus from radio. However, in January 2003, he got an opportunity when hired by Apex Broadcasting as the all-new Coast 92.5 signed on the air as a hot AC station. He helped create a Saturday Night Request Show, which then morphed into an “All Request Totally 80s Saturday Night”. He remained at WCSQ until 2005.
The End Of His Terrestrial Career
In February 2005, he got an opportunity to move over to “then” Charleston’s number 1 At Work Station, Sunny 96.9. In the summer of 2005, Sunny 96.9 started it’s very successfully Totally 80s Weekends. It was only fitting that Mike Bills bring the success of his show atCoast 92.5 over to WSUY on Saturday nights. He remained on Saturday nights from July 2005 – August 2006. By January 2007, the Totally 80s Weekends were STILL going as Mike moved his show to Saturday Middays (10:00am – 3:00pm). On October 6, 2007, Mike Bills sat behind the microphone for the last time at WSUY on their Totally 80s Weekends. This would be the last time he would do a radio show. On October 12, 2007, WSUY surprisingly flipped formats to a country format. This left Mike little or no opportunities to continue in his radio career in Charleston.. In December 2007, he retired from radio, but is looking to get back into the business.
Post Radio & Internet Radio
However, his passion for music and “playing” music remains extremely strong. Mike believes the discipline that radio discjockeys adhere to while on the air make them better wedding DJs, event DJs and so forth. In late 2012, Mike discovered internet radio and has hosted a few shows on local station Kinetic HiFi in Charleston, SC. The reason is that radio DJs perform better as mobile wedding and event DJs are because of the structure and knowledge of how music is to be programmed. When Mike programs an event or wedding, he uses knowledge that he learned while in radio. Plus, being on the radio allowed him to become a great announcer so he could serve as an emcee for your Charleston area event.
