Modern Couples Choose Their Wedding Music - The DJ Does Not

27 April 2025

In a recent discovery call with a future client, I had a very bright couple asking me a lot of questions. A quick discovery call is usually my second form of communication with a future client after they have visited my website and completed a contact form. Based on the types of questions this couple asked me, you could tell they had been doing their homework, on not only how to hire their wedding DJ, but to also hiring all the other wedding vendors for their big day.  One of the questions asked turns out to be one of the most popular questions that modern brides and grooms ask me prior to signing a contract. The age-old question; "How do you handle song requests at your weddings?" Back in August of 2023, I put together a post that explained some of the viewpoints on requests. I will post that link inside this post, but in order to properly answer a question about requests, the couple needs to know who is in charge (overall) with their music? Hint! It's actually not the wedding DJ.

Perhaps there are other wedding DJs who will read this post and laugh at my rather "unorthodox" viewpoint at DJing in general.  That's ok. Sometimes life can be a little lonely when you have those types of viewpoints, but I am ok :) Before I go any further, here is the link about the different viewpoints on song requests at weddings <---CLICK HERE  When I started my DJ service, I took a look at what I was getting into and determined the best way to make the modern bride and groom happy was to make it about them.  When I first began to sit down with couples, some of the first questions I would ask them  is "What kind of music do you like?" - YOUR wedding is a day that should be dedicated to the both of you. Every single aspect of YOUR wedding should revolve around you. From the style of wedding dress to the tux; from the type of flowers to the light bites during cocktail hour. From your signature cocktail to the 4 course plated dinner and everything in between.  In my preliminary discussions with future clients, I try to drive home the point that the music on their wedding day is one of the most important parts of their overall wedding day.  Have you ever had a favorite movie that you watched over and over? Some of those great movies had iconic soundtracks.  Case in point, the recent passing of Val Kilmer caused me to pull up the iconic soundtrack to the first Top Gun movie released back in 1986.  For more information on just how awesome the music was back in 1986, <---CLICK HERE  - If you are a fan of the movie, just crank up the movie soundtrack when you get a chance.  Think of how you would react to the movie if different songs were in the movie. The movie may have a different vibe and not have the same impact.  This is how modern brides and grooms should look at the music for their wedding day. The music you choose for your wedding day should be a vibe all about you as a couple.

YOUR Wedding Day Means YOUR Music

So lets continue, if you will, with the movie soundtrack analogy, modern brides and grooms need to put together a soundtrack for their own movie. You know my track record for selling myself on a discovery call is pretty good, but one of the things I always make sure to mention when I am talking about music with a couple is no two weddings are the same. In 1985, no two weddings were the same, and that is still the case in 2025. There are STILL wedding DJs who think the key to success at your wedding is playing the same, boring and tired 200 songs that your guests have been burned out on for years and years. Those are the wedding DJs you probably need to run away from. Most of them come equipped with exceptionally cheesy looking websites. Some have even tried to work with me. Nope! Sorry dude. Actually, never! Remember this - cheesy websites = cheesy wedding DJ - No one wants a cheesy wedding DJ in 2025.

Every single song that you hear at your wedding should make you happy. Even though there will be times where you and your significant other will be walking around trying to get a hug into each and every one of your guests, you will end up hearing more than you think. Even during a slower time of the evening (dinner), you can have romantic music playing that reminds of you of your love for one another. While weddings take months or even years to plan, you are living in the moment (minute by minute) on your actual wedding day.  I don't want to spoil it for you, but after months of planning, your wedding is going to fly by.

Highly Customized Wedding Playlists For The Modern Bride And Groom

Since I believe that music is one of the most important aspects of your wedding day,  I enjoy sitting with new clients and discussing their musical likes and dislikes.  Perhaps its my stance as a non-traditional wedding DJ that makes me think about the music for your wedding day even more than other wedding DJs. OR maybe its the fact I am not trying to be a jack of all trades and sell you a bunch of services that I know nothing about. It is my goal to give you and your guests a night they won't soon forget. But this only happens if you take a serious approach at putting together the music for your wedding day - piece by piece.  I like to think of myself as an "arranger" or "producer". The person who is going to take all of the songs you grew up with, and love and arrange them in a magical way. This is what separates the cheesy wedding DJs from the sophisticated, classy & elegant wedding DJs like me.  After being a part of hundreds of weddings over the years, it is NOT as daunting a task to selecting music as you think.  I am here to help you, but this starts out with a conversation after you've contracted me to be your wedding DJ and can continue in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding day.

Every modern bride and groom are different. Different musical tastes. Then there are your parents. We've got to get them out on the dance floor too. And, if you are lucky enough to still have them around, your grandparents.  Before your wedding day, you will probably have experienced 4 or 5 of your friends weddings. Did you see anything that bothered you? Did you see anything that you absolutely did not like? These are the experiences that shape your image of how your wedding day is going to be.

The Best Wedding DJs Will Take Your Music And Arrange It Like A Movie Soundtrack

Your wedding DJ will take all of the music you select and develop it into one of the most memorable soundtracks. Here's a true story. I had a client several years ago who absolutely loved the way her wedding night went from a musical standpoint. She requested that I send a thumb drive of all of the songs I played for her. Unfortunately, due to legal and copyright issues, I could not do this. But  the reason I bring this up is her and her new husband were just sitting back one lazy Sunday afternoon curled up on the bed thinking of their wedding night and all of those songs. Those moments are what make selecting the best music for your wedding playlist by the bride and groom so very important. Odds are if she had hired a wedding DJ who did not give her the latitude for their wedding playlist, the music would not have been nearly as impactful.  Outside the love that brought the both of you together with family and friends on your wedding day, music is the force that forges memories that will last a lifetime on this most special day. Do it. Be sure to sit down with your wedding DJ and let them know how important music is to you.
