The Essential Gen Z Guide To Finding The Best Wedding DJ

04 July 2025

You know I've heard rumblings recently that Gen Z brides and grooms may not be able to find me soon because of AI putting Google out of business.  Well, if that's true, I'm gonna ride the coat tails of my substantial SEO investment over the past decade into the sunset, and focus my messaging and thought leadership into getting in the minds of the Gen Z bride and groom.  After all, Gen Z is getting married right now, correct? It's hard to believe that a lot of uncertainty has been created by tariffs and inflation would not steer the Gen Z couple in their decision making as it pertains to their wedding. After all, you may be making a decision to spend thousands of dollars on a single day. Uncertainty about finances appears to be affecting all generations these days, and we'd all be naive to believe that it's not boiling over to couples planning a wedding, especially in the increasingly affluent wedding destination of Charleston, SC.

I mean something has to be up when I see some of my favorite wedding venues are down 40% in their bookings for the year and others are offering steep discounts during prime wedding season dates in 2026. The truth of the matter is planning a wedding is a big commitment, not only from an emotional standpoint, but also a financial one.  So many articles you read online point to Gen Z as putting an end to a lot of the customs we've become accustomed to seeing over the past 20-30 years, and for good reason; a lot of it is very cheesy. :) Gen Z also appears to be opting for smaller gathering as well; and I am here to tell you that you have the freedom to do whatever you want when it comes to your wedding. It's also been discussed that Gen Z brides and grooms are all about creating a certain "vibe" for their wedding day.  When you've been a professional wedding DJ for as long as I have, you get to cater to many different generations; Gen X, Millenials, Baby Boomers etc.  When I started in the wedding industry, the millenial generation happened to be where Gen Z is positioned right now. They were trying to get their footing in the real world after the Great Recession, and now a lot of Gen Z are trying to get their footing after all of the uncertainty and changes brought on by the pandemic.

Professional Wedding DJs Bring The Vibe.

As a Gen Z couple, you are looking to create a vibe at your wedding not seen before at any wedding you've been to previously.  While that elusive, cool "vibe" you are looking to create may be in a different looking wedding dress, decor or venue location, the central focus of that "vibe" should center around creating an amazing mix of music during all the parts of your wedding day that define you as a couple. Be sure to interview numerous wedding DJs before you make a decision. There is lots to consider when choosing your wedding DJ and if you are a Gen Z bride and groom who like to consume podcasts, you are invited to check out The Mike Bills Podcast. When considering the type of vibe you'd like to have at your wedding, think about your preferred musical tastes. I've noticed that modern brides and grooms have begun to steer away from tradition in 2025, which is totally fine because this is your day. For some ideas about The Best Non Traditional Wedding Playlist <--Click HERE. Whichever wedding DJ you decide to hire should offer to provide with direction and consultation on the music for your wedding day. If you already have a general idea of some of the key songs for your big day, that's awesome, but for most brides and grooms (especially Gen Z), this is your first rodeo, so putting together the best wedding playlist can be daunting.

Keep It Simple. Avoid The Upgrades.

I've spoke about this topic a lot in my blog over the years. In a time where every street corner (or corner of the internet) is now a wedding vendor. If you don't take anything else from hititng my blog and reading over this post, please understand this, as this is what separates me from all the other wedding DJs out there vying for your business. I never anticipated turning my business into a huge wedding DJ company, never. The desire to begin my wedding DJ business came as a desire to keep playing music after I left the radio industry. The desire to form my wedding DJ business came as a desire to share my passion for music with brides and grooms and to help them curate the perfect mix of music that defines them as a couple. When I first started out as a wedding DJ, nothing else mattered.  I was so focused on putting together my style as a wedding DJ online that I never considered offering any other types of add-ons or upgrades.  For more perspective on why I choose to not offer upgrades, click the preceding link. And now, close to 15 years later, I still care nothing than to meet a bride and groom and talk music. Learning the musical tastes of prospective clients is one of my favorite things to do, because you can learn a lot in just a few minutes about the type of music they desire at their wedding.

I will never pressure you any bride or groom purchasing any additional services, because I simply do not offer them. I can steer you in the right direction of some of the tried and true vendors who I've worked with over the years. See my Preferred Vendors page. It's the music that matters for your wedding day. It's the music that is going to allow you and your guests to remember your wedding day forever. That is the power of music. From the emotional vibes of your ceremony to the chill vibes during your cocktail hour to the softer sounds of the dinner music hour to the raging party on the dance floor, every portion of your wedding day will tell a story during your wedding day.

Quality Over Quantity

My desire to become a successiul professional wedding DJ was something that came to fruition when there was no longer any place for me on the air in the Charleston radio market. What can I say? I am a guy who is passionate about the music.  I was recently approached by a competitor who appeared to be bragging about the number of events they had last year and what they had lined up for this year. It seemed to me that they would just be a number and would DJ for "anything" that had a pulse. For many reasons, I made a decision to stay away from this competitor, but if you are a Gen Z couple who are serious about finding the best wedding DJ, stay clear of any wedding DJ who is counting the number of events on their website and / or reviews. They are clearly a DJ who do not care about "quality", but instead of "quantity".  When a wedding DJ focuses on "quality" only, they work with each and every client with the type of finesse you don't see at DJ services who boast about the number of events they do on annual basis. When a bride and groom hire me to be the wedding DJ for their big day, there are no distractions. They have me for the entire day. There is no worry about whether I am going to be on time because my absolute focus is on one client at a time. I've always stated throughout the course of my history in business as a successful DJ service that your wedding is NOT just another gig, but instead the best day of your life that is filled with the music you know and love that forges lasting memories. None of that is possible if you hire a wedding DJ who is focused on running up his review and bragging about the quantity of events.

Ready To Speak To DJ Mike Bills About Your Wedding?

In a world where everyone thinks they are a some type of wedding vendor, the modern Gen Z bride and groom need to aware and careful as to who they hire for their wedding.  When it comes to making sure that your wedding day is a day that you and your guests remember for a very long time, you must speak to wedding vendors who genuinely make you feel like you are the only bride and groom they are working for. Weddings should never be looked at as some type of assembly line where hundreds and thousands of things are being attended to at one time. Yes, a wedding has a TON of moving parts, Gen Z couples need to hire wedding vendors who give them TOTAL focus and not brag about the number of bookings they have or don't have.  Gen Z brides and grooms should check the reviews, and especially their website for a truly professionally designed website that looks classy and elegant, not something that an aucitoneer or cheesy game host created.  One big thing to remember is if a website looks cheesy or not professionally designed with a classy and elegant approach, odds are the DJs ALSO act in that manner as well.  Anyway, let me get off my soapbox. Thank you very much for visiting my website and blog.
