Why I Am NOT A Wedding DJ Who Offers Add-Ons And Upgrades

31 October 2020

Before we get into the nitty gritty of why I won't offer add-ons and upgrades, let me provide to you that link over to my Weddingwire profile for that 100th review. <----Click HERE to taken over now.   Also, if this is your first time over to my blog and missed the highly emotional post about Why I Specialize In ONE WEDDING PER DAY, <----Click HERE. Now, that we got this bit of business out of the way, let's move onto the good stuff.
No Add ons or upgrades

I Am A Professional Wedding DJ FIRST.
When you hire a wedding DJ who operates his business like I do, you get a guy who is truly focused on the task at hand; which is creating an incredible mix of music for his clients. That's a task that I do not take lightly. It's also a task that requires a lot of focus and preparation.  When you contract me to be your wedding DJ, the price you pay includes just that. When we sit down and discuss the vision for your wedding day, I am NOT going to try to nickel and dime you with a bunch of extra stuff "just" to get more money out of you. I believe it's WAY more important for me to provide the service that a wedding DJ is famous for; music.  I never set out to become a jack-of-all-trades, because the old saying goes "A jack of all trades equates to a master of none".  Is it possible for someone to be an expert in four or five things? I suppose anything is possible,  but the likelihood falls considerably the more add-ons or upgrades tries to sell you. I did not get into being a successful wedding DJ so that I can "sell" you things. I got into it because of the undying passion for playing music that became a part of me when I did radio for several years.  I don't know a darn thing about uplighting or photobooths, and I will keep things that way forever.
Choosing Your Wedding DJ Without Upgrades

Offering Add-Ons And Upgrades Literally Takes Food Off Someone's Table.
You are probably asking how this is possible and whose food is taken off the table. Well, for one it's not my food. It's the many, many other wedding vendors who have decided to get into this industry and specialize in their services.  Since I decided a long time ago that I was never going to offer add-ons or upgrades, I made a decision to form alliances with great companies who did "one" thing and did it well. I've actually worked with Charleston Uplighting for close to a decade. They are a company who specializes in wedding and event lighting. They do it very well.  They will meet with you at "your" wedding venue to discuss how you'd like your uplighting / string lighting / cake pinspotting, as well as other lighting options set up. I don't have any desire to personally offer you these services. I would rather refer you to someone who knows ALOT about lighting, rather than be a wedding DJ who buys a bunch a lights with no other interest than making more money from you. If every wedding DJ under the sun offered wedding and event lighting, companies like Charleston Uplighting would eventually have to close their doors. This is NOT fair, but it continues to happen. As a professional wedding DJ, I want to focus on ONE thing and do it perfectly. I will gladly leave the lighting to the "lighting" companies. The pressure is on to perform at a high level and your lights are something I would not rather not worry about.  So, while you see a page on my website that is dedicated to "uplighting", you are given a shortcut over to the website of Charleston Uplighting, where you can speak with them and set up a time to speak. Another incredible lighting company in the area that is so good I could not possibly offer anything close to their quality is Technical Event Company. I had the pleasure of working with Technical Event Company back in early 2017 during the first ever Charleston Wedding Week. They do unbelievable work.  Simply put, when a wedding DJ offers these types of services, they do so at a discount (when they are not lighting / design experts). They do it just to pad the invoice they are going to charge you and this hurts the companies who truly are experts in their field.

Jack Of All Trades Master Of None

I Don't Know Anything About Photobooths.
Back at the end of 2017, I found myself at a Christmas party that was comprised of wedding industry professionals from around the city.  It was at this party where I would meet Melissa from Lowcountry Photobooth. I struck up a conversation with her and the next thing I knew I was featuring her on my blog about Reasons To Have A Photobooth At Your Wedding.  <---Click HERE to be taken back over to this archived post.  Lowcountry Photobooth is another company who "specializes" in photobooths. They don't try to sell numerous different services, which is why I wanted to refer my clients over and use them as an "extension" to my own company. If my clients need a photobooth, I refer them over to this company and we are all winners. I am a winner because I helped out my client find what they needed, and the photobooth company is a winner too because they just earned income without me selfishly taking it away from them.  Simply put, I don't need to buy all this expensive photobooth equipment and "pretend" to specialize in them when I am actually a wedding DJ who doesn't know anything about how they work. I will not offer a photobooth as an add-on or upgrade because I will take any money away from a fine company like Lowcountry Photobooth who has worked hard to establish their reputation.

Modern Bride And Groom Dancing

Just A Wedding DJ Specializing In Putting Together Your Playlist.
Putting together the music that will become the perfect mix of music for your special day is hard work.  Not only do I have no desire to take money away from hard-working and highly rated professional wedding vendors, but I don't want the burden of having to provide other services that I am clearly not an expert in.  I want to do one thing and do it the absolute best that I possibly can. Offering all these extra services (which I know nothing about) takes away from my true passion, which is to help brides and grooms create an amazing mix of music that will have them, as well as their guest talking for years.  This way of operating my company is not going to change as long as I am in business. You deserve to have a wedding DJ who true focus and passion is the music, as that what a DJ specializes in; music.

I hope this post clears up some of the questions I've gotten over the years about add-ons and upgrades.
