20 Most Popular Musicians From Boston For Your Wedding Playlist

24 May 2017

The city that has in it that popular bar that got it's own TV show back in the 1980s, a Hall Of Fame quarterback in Tom Brady, the Bruins, the Celtics, Paul Revere, and Samuel Adams has been having it's share of brides and grooms come on down to the number 2 wedding destination in the country to get married. Both Boston and Charleston have histories that played a major role in American history. Perhaps it's the people of Boston that see Charleston as a city just as rich in beauty and a wonderful place to get married? Either way, in my continued salute of Charleston, South Carolina as a top wedding destination in America and in most cases, the world, this post is dedicated to musicians and bands from the Boston area. There are so many newly engaged couples that come from major metro areas across America to Charleston sprinkle their playlists with songs from their home cities. Even if you aren't from Boston, have some fun with this blog post and see the talent and fun you could be adding to your playlist from Boston.

 Boston

You didn't think I would leave off the great classic rock band from the 70s and 80s whose name is the great city we are talking about, now would you?  Boston's first album released in 1976 became one of the greatest selling albums of all time. When you put the record on today, it still sounds fresh and you feel like turning your stereo up to 11. "More Than A Feeling" was released in September of 1976 as the first single of their debut record. The song would make it all the way to #5 on the Hot 100 charts.

Aerosmith
Another great classic band coming from Boston on the list, and this track off the "Mrs Doubtfire" soundtrack is a great party track, but you might also add in their collaboration with Run DMC. Commonly referred to as those "Bad Boys From Boston".  Aerosmith ended the 80s in great fashion by releasing the album Pump. "Janie's Got A Gun" was the 2nd song to be released off the record and peak at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

James Taylor
Coming from Boston, you guys are getting married in Charleston but are putting a song about "Mexico" on your playlist? Just one of many from the great James Taylor. "How Sweet It Is" is another one that is popular for the speciality dances and shows up on my 40 Most Requested Songs For Your Wedding Playlist. "Mexico" was released as a single in 1975 from the album Gorilla. The song would peak at #5 on the adult contemporary charts.

New Edition
New Edition was one of the most popular groups to come out of Boston during the 80s. They are featured on my archived post that features 25 Songs From Boy Bands For Your Wedding Playlist. "Cool It Now" was released in the late summer of 1984 off New Edition's self titled album and would peak at #4 on the Hot 100 in early 1985.

Bobby Brown
After New Edition broke up and everyone went their separate ways, here's one of the members in Bobby Brown dancing into our boom boxes in the mid - late 80s. Boston-born, of course. Bobby Brown would end up having a successful solo career in the late 80s and early 90s and would marry Whitney Houston.  "Every Little Step" would be the 4th song to hit radio from the album Don't Be Cruel, and would peak at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Pixies
Ah yes, we've arrived to the 80s alternative portion of the Boston musician and bands playlist. I sure miss Kim Deal, but enjoy this nice love song. "Here Comes Your Man" would become a signature song of the Pixies when it was released in the summer of 1989. The song would peak at #3 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and is featured on my 80s Alternative Cocktail Hour Playlist.

Donna Summer

It still pains me to this day that the queen of disco has passed. From her 70s domination on the disco dance floors to her 80s resurgence, Donna Summer deserves your attention when you are making that Boston-born playlist.  Back in the spring and summer of 1989, you could not turn the radio on without hearing "This Time I Know It's For Real".  The song would peak at #2 on the adult contemporary chart.

The Cars
Another 70s and 80s alternative rock band that you really need to give a second look to when sculpting that playlist with Boston flavor. "Magic" can be found on the 1984 album Heartbeat City. The song would peak at #1 on the Mainstream rock chart and is featured on my Soundtrack To A Summer In Charleston, SC

 J Geils Band
Peter Wolf and the J Geils Bands are Boston-born and bred, and this song is a must have in the 80s category of your wedding playlist. "Centerfold" is a really fun and popular track that gets put on a lot of wedding playlists today. The song was released in the fall of 1981 in the very early days of MTV and would peak at #1 on the Hot 100 in February 1982.

New Kids On The Block
Oh my Gosh! This list just keeps getting more and more fun doesn't it? Hey, I swear I did not plan it this way, they just sort of lined up that way. Yes, I do like the 80s, such a fun decade. New Kids On The Block are Boston born, and I've heard that Justin Timberlake likes New Kids as well. "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" was the 2nd song to hit radio off the Hangin Tough record and would peak at #3 on the Hot 100 in early 1989.

 Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Fast forward to the great 1990s for this one, 1997 to be exact. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones would release the album Lets Face It in 1996, and the first single to be released was "The Impression That I Get". It would become their signature song and peak at #1 on the alternative songs chart.

 Dropkick Murphys
Quintesential Boston music and a must-have at any Bostonian couples wedding. If you must know, we play this in Charleston ALL the time. Here they are teaming up with the Mighty Mighty Bosstones for their signature song.  "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" has been a choice for the grand entrance of the bridal party at a lot of my weddings in past years.

 The Lemonheads
A mighty fine alternative band from Boston here covering an old Simon & Garfunkel tune. Back in1992, the Lemonheads would record and release this classic tune and would score a Top 10 hit on the Alternative song chart.

Guster
Formed in the early 90s in Beantown, this song posted here came out in 2010. A beautiful song that would sound perfect on your "Boston-infused" playlist for your soon-to-be epic destination wedding in Charleston.

 Bell Biv Devoe
Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie Devoe getting together after the breakup of New Edition in the late 80s and making quite the group. Well, they made a timeless classic in 1990 with "Poison". If you are from Boston, you should be proud that one of the biggest wedding dance songs was created in Beantown. "Poison" would peak at #1 on the Hot R&B charts in the summer of 1990.

 Al B. Sure
I'm not trying to "punish" you, but this song by Al B. Sure would "sure" sound good a little late in the evening to cool off to as the night ends. 80s R&B at it's finest from the great city of Boston. "Nite & Day" was released back in February of 1988 and would peak at #7 on the Hot 100, and #1 on the Hot Black singles chart.

Til Tuesday
Aimee Mann went to the Berklee School Of Music in Boston, but dropped out and formed a punk band called Young Snakes. By 1983, she would formed Til Tuesday.  In 1985, Til Tuesday would release the album Voices Carry, and it's title track would peak at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1986, the band would score a Top 10 hit on the mainstream rock chart.

American Authors
Formerly called The Blue Pages, the American Authors were formed in Boston in 2012.  They produced recorded and released one of the most fitting songs for your wedding day.  Your wedding day is going to be the "best day of your life". This signature song was released in the spring of 2013 and would peak at #1 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Lettuce
If you are a bride or groom from Boston and looking to add a little more funk in your wedding playlist, you might consider adding some Lettuce to the playlist. I was actually introduced to Lettuce when one of my clients wanted to use Sam Huff's Flying Raging Machine for their bridal party introduction.

Marky Mark
Back in the magical year of music in 1991, Marky Mark would turn nightclubs upside down and inside out in the summer when "Good Vibrations" was released.  "Good Vibrations" would peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the late summer of 1991.
