Top 20 Musicians From Atlanta GA For Your Wedding Playlist

02 September 2018

Hope everyone is continuing to have a restful and relaxing Labor Day Weekend here in Charleston. As I mentioned in my last post, this weekend kicks off the Fall wedding season here in Charleston. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have off this weekend and went out to one of the most beautiful beaches on the East coast; Kiawah Island. Check out my Twitter or Instagram for some videos that I uploaded of my outing. Since it's the holiday weekend, I figure I would continue with the fun posts and give Hotlanta some love. Being the Number 2 Wedding Destination in the country, Charleston gets a lot of brides and grooms from the big cities like Philadelphia, Boston, New York City, and Chicago coming to the Holy City to get married. In the past, I've created individual posts for those cities and featured musicians that were from those particular cities. Oftentimes, when couples hire me from those particular geographical locations, they add some of those artists into their playlists for their Charleston wedding. As one of the best Charleston wedding DJs, I can tell you that Atlanta is a hot bed for musical talent and you'll see that a lot of the artists added to this post are in fairly heavy rotation at Charleston weddings.

With only 5 hours of driving separating the two cities, Charleston, SC is a very popular choice for Atlanta brides and grooms seeking an amazing location for their destination wedding. Correction: Depending upon your style of driving, it might only be a 4 1/2 hour drive for you, but you get my point. :) If you are recently engaged and living in Atlanta and are looking to get married in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, I invite you to leave work at NOON this Friday, and you'll be checked into your hotel downtown by 6:00pm to enjoy a great weekend in Charleston. And believe me, you'll want to stay much longer than a weekend. :) As you get ready to come to Charleston for your wedding, don't forget to think about throwing these artists into your wedding playlist.

Outkast
Andre 3000 and Big Boi formed Outkast back in 1991 in the Atlanta area, and were vvery influential in making Southern hip hop more mainstream. With songs like "Ms. Jsckosn" and "B.O.B", followed in 2003 with other songs like "Hey Ya" and "The Way You Move", there aren't too many modern Charleston weddings where Outkast is off the playlist.

Gnarls Barkley
CeeLo Green and music producer Danger Mouse make up the Atlanta duo, Gnarls Barkley. Their first album was release in 2006 and featured the hit "Crazy", which went all the way to Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sugarland
Sugarland are another duo of Atlanta, but from the country music genre. The duo was formed in 2002, but it was their album"The Incredible Machine" that featured the song "Stuck Like Glue" that went all the way to Number 2 on the Billboard country charts.

Kris Kross
Kris Kross is the fourth musical artist on my post, and it just so happens that they are ALSO a duo. This duo consisted of Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly and Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith. Back in February 1992, their single "Jump" had us all jumping around on dance floors all over Charleston.

Collective Soul
Collective Soul were in my opinion one of the integral 90s bands in the alternative music scene of that decade. You might consider adding some Collective Soul into your wedding playlist if you decide to do an alternative 90s rock themed cocktail hour.

Black Crowes
The Black Crowes were another rock band formed in the Marietta area and released their first album "Shake Your Moneymaker" in 1990, which featured the song "Hard To Handle" as well as "She Talks To Angels". Check out the remix of "Hard To Handle" down below that features a horns remix.

TI
Clifford Joseph Harris changed his name to T.I and went on to release 9 total albums, of which 7 of them went into the Top 5.

TLC
TLC were one of the most successful all girl groups of the 1990s. Their mega album "Crazy Sexy Cool" in 1994 featured one of their biggest hits "Waterfalls", but I've seen "No Scrubs" show up on a lot of Charleston wedding playlists in recent years.

Cee-Lo Green
Cee-Lo Green was part of the duo "Gnarls Barkley" who released single in 2010 "Forget You" that went all the way to Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and was a big request at Charleston weddings back in 2011.

Indigo Girls
The Indigo Girls were a folk duo based out of the Decatur area. One of their most popular songs was "Closer To Fine", which was released in 1989. The texture of their music would be great for an Indie / folk cocktail hour at your Charleston wedding.

Ludacris
Ludacris grew up in the Atlanta area and was a DJ on the radio. Ludacris was one of the first Southern rappers to go mainstream along side Outkast in the early 2000s.

Lil Jon
He formed Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz back in the mid 1990s. The East Side Boyz broke up in the mid 2000s, and Lil Jon released Crunk Rock in 2010.  There are lots of requests to "Get Low" at Charleston weddings.

Arrested Development
Formed in Atlanta in 1988, they released their first album in 1992 "3 Years, 5 Months And 2 Days In The Life Of", which featured 3 radio hits: "Mr. Wendel", "People Everyday", and "Tennessee"

Usher
Usher moved to Atlanta when he was 12 years old, at which time his mother began to put him in his music competitions. The rest is history. In the summer of 2010, he released "DJ Got Us In Fallin' In Love" with Pitbull which was a Top 5 hit and still in pretty heavy rotation at Charleston weddings.

The Tams
Depending on the bride and groom and their guests, Charleston weddings have been known to get "beachy". The Tams may have been formed in Atlanta, but they are one of those bands that are on shag / beach music playlists. Their biggest hit was from 1968. Take a listen to it down below.

Ying Yang Twins
The Ying Yng Twins were one of the most popular hip-hop duos to come out of Atlanta. They worked with Britney Spears on her album "In The Zone", and would release one of their signature songs, "Salt Shaker" in the fall of 2003.

Jagged Edge
Jagged Edge's roots go back to 1993 and by the beginning of the 2000s, they would release a popular song at weddings, "Let's Get Married", and in 2001 would have their highest charting song around 9/11 with "Where The Party At". "Where The Party At" would peak at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Gladys Knight
Gladys Knight's recording career spanned from the 60s through the 80s with her band "The Pips".  Her signature song was "Midnight Train To Georgia", which peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. If you click on the link up above, you'll be taken to a wonderful song for your wedding playlist, her hit "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me".

Bubba Sparxxx
Bubba Sparxxx released the album Ms New Booty back in 2005, and the title track saw traction with the Billboard charts peaking at #7. You'll also hear Atlanta hip-hop group, The Ying Yang Twins singing in the middle of this mid 2000s hip hop classic.

Shawn Mullins
If I ever get the chance to put together a post about some of the most popular 90s one-hit wonders, Shawn Mullins would be on the list. "Lullaby: would become one of the most requested songs of 1998. The song would peak at #1 on the Adult Top 40 chart.
