In recent years, my blog has become one of the most popular wedding DJ blogs on the web.  Ever since this iteration of my website went live in the middle of 2016, it's been my goal to produce valuable and compelling content for the modern bride and groom who are seeking the best wedding DJ for them on their most special day. Those same brides and grooms also are searching for information on how to get started in not only creating a playlist with songs about them, but also including songs that will get all their guests out on the dance floor.  As streaming continues to grow in popularity, more modern brides and grooms have approached me in recent years with a lot of their music playlists created on Spotify.  As one of the top wedding DJs in Charleston, it's always been my goal to stay up to date with how my clients acquire their music and listen to their music. I am proud to announce that Charleston Wedding DJ Mike Bills is now on Spotify.

We've made to Lucky #13. That's Episode 13 of The Mike Bills Podcast. In case you are wondering, it appears as though the upper respiratory infection that hijacked my voice earlier has passed. Thank goodness! It's nice to get back behind the microphone and talk about Charleston Wedding DJ stuff.  If the Number 13 is your lucky day, this podcast is for you, especially if you were lucky enough to get engaged over the holidays.  Engagement season is in full swing.  Website traffic has been through the roof over these past few weeks, as lots and lots of modern brides and grooms are checking me out. Thank you for your interest. Let us talk about the music for your wedding.  The wedding entertainment is what you and your guests will remember about your most special day for the rest of your life.  In 2020, there are so many wedding DJs popping up in Charleston claiming they are the best. They will also claim they are the most popular. Let me quote from the late Neil Peart, drummer of the band Rush. "I never wanted to be famous, I wanted to be good."  I agree wholeheartedly with Neil's quote, and I'll take it one step further: I want to make sure I am presenting myself as a professional wedding DJ. You as a modern bride and groom also need to make sure you hire a professional wedding DJ.

It's still a bit surreal we are now in 2020. A new decade means a new era of nostalgia and a different historical perspective on music as we move further away from previous decades.  One of my passions as a wedding DJ is looking back and researching the best music of certain decades of music. For example, on social media when sharing my thoughts on music, I would use the hashtag #The80sAt30 when celebrating the 30th anniversary of a popular 80s record. Now, that 2020 is here, I've started to use the hashtag #The90sAt30 as we're now 30 years past 1990. It's hard to believe we'll celebrate 30 years from the debut of Wilson Phillips, and their single "Hold On".  Now that the 2010s are behind us, what were some of the greatest musical moments of the past 10 years? Which songs that were released over the past decade made an impact at weddings all over the country?  Which songs connected with brides and grooms in Charleston and look to stay on wedding playlists in the years to above? You'll want to read on as DJ Mike Bills, one of the top Charleston Wedding DJs explores some of the hottest and requested music at wedding receptions of the 2010s.

Here we are at third Friday already in January 2020 and it's nice to be getting back to some sense of normalcy as it pertains to the Mike Bills Podcast. You are probably asking what happened? Well, somehow I contracted some type of upper respiratory infection that knocked my voice out for about 2 weeks and inhibited me from recording fresh new content. Hopefully you caught Episode 11 because it was a "Best Of" episode that offered up some amazing tips on how to find the best wedding DJ for your big day in Charleston or Savannah.  Episode 12 will end up being the first fully-produced episode of the new decade with fresh new content.  I'm still new to this podcast thing, but one thing is for sure, if I want to have continuity, I have to carry the hand sanitizer with me everywhere I go, as well as make sure I am getting my Vitamin C supplements.  It had been 3 years since I had caught anything like this, and hopefully it'll be another three or five years.  You know it's hard to believe that here in Charleston, where the city has become one of the top wedding destinations in the country, that my podcast stands alone as one of it's kind.  Don't look for this steady stream of content to end anytime soon! As a matter of fact, I have only just begun.

You know it's a rare occasion that I get under the weather. As a matter of fact until early this year, I don't believe I've been ill for 3 years. But, as the calendar moved from 2019 into 2020, something hit my throat and upper respiratory area thus hindering my voice and the ability to record a new podcast.   But, you know what, I think you will appreciate this week's podcast. Since I've had such an issue with my voice in recent weeks, I decided to go back into my archives and find some pieces of production that you can listen to and find very helpful as you begin the search for the best Charleston Wedding DJ for your big day.  Episode 11 of The Mike Bills Podcast is the perfect, quick primer for those brides and grooms looking to secure a great wedding DJ for their Charleston wedding in 2020 or 2021.

I've talked about it in The Mike Bills Podcast and I've written about it numerous times on this blog. You can find millions of posts about how to find the right wedding DJ for your big day. And I must say that a lot of those articles are from reputable wedding DJs that I would have come play at my own wedding.  YOUR wedding reception here in Charleston is going to be the grandest of parties and should be looked upon as a gift to all your friends and family who have taken time off of work to travel to the Holy City to marry the man or woman of your dreams. All that being said, it is completely horrifying when I read articles about "being your own DJ" at your wedding.  Some of these posts tend to come from people who are trying to carve out their own niche online by telling you to be frugal when it comes to planning your wedding. I certainly tend to be pretty frugal, but there are certain things that I won't scrimp on. Is music important to you? Most of my clients LOVE their music, and the fact that I allow them to design their own soundtrack for their special day is something that they just eat up. It's YOUR wedding day, so the music should be about YOU.

While we do live in an Amazon world today where we are just a few clicks away from buying anything we want and having it arrive on our doorstep in less than 24 hours, Alexa will be unable to deliver you a great wedding DJ.  I hope that doesn't sound inconvenient to you, because your Charleston wedding DJ is one of the most important parts of your big day. Your wedding DJ is such an important part of your day that you need to take a more serious approach in getting to know them.  You should be meeting with them and seeing if you connect. Does this wedding DJ give you a good feeling? Does this person look like they will be the right fit for you? They are the person who will work seamlessly with your wedding planner and other vendors to ensure the perfect execution of your timeline.   Whether it's a phone call, a Skype, a Facetime, or an in-person meeting, you should ALWAYS  meet your wedding DJ before making a hiring decision.  If the couple lives outside of the area, I will still make it a  point to meet them the week of their wedding or also if they are making a special trip into town to meet their other wedding vendors. I promise you will thank me for this excellent piece of advice. And to make your decision even easier and to trim your DJ leads list down, your wedding DJs should be ready and "willing" to meet with you to pitch themselves to you and tell you how they are going to execute your day.

Are you getting married in one of the most beautiful cities in the country in 2020 or beyond? I would love very much to be your Charleston Wedding DJ and work with you one on one to create an amazing mix of the music you know and love. Let me allow myself right now to be a little thankful during this holiday season and reflect a tad on some of my accomplishments this year. Sometimes you just have to sit back and close your eyes and be thankful that you have literally one of the coolest jobs on the planet. But before I go on, I should say it doesn't really feel like work when you truly love what you do.  It's been another truly great year for my company, as I have gotten to work with another great set of modern brides and grooms who chose to get married in this beautiful city. The Mike Bills Podcast was launched back on November 1 and is one of a kind in the Charleston wedding market, providing brides and grooms yet another angle for highly valuable content needed in making one of the most important decisions during their wedding planning process. How did I get here? It all started years ago when I DJ'ed my first wedding and developed an undying passion which has been to change the narrative when the topic of the "wedding DJ" came up in conversation among brides and grooms.

Doing a Google search in recent months for "Charleston Wedding DJs" has become one of the most terrifying things, especially for someone who is very active in the market at keeping their website updated with some of the freshest content. Of course, my web consultants who I have hired to maintain my website always preach to me and say "Stop searching for yourself on Google". It's a hard habit to break, especially when engagement season is getting ramped up and you are looking for some great brides and grooms to fill in the dates on your 2020 wedding calendar.  The biggest downer when you search for wedding DJs in Charleston is the vast amount of these listing sites that pop up in practically every single industry you can think of. They tend to occupy spaces on Google that websites like mine could be. When you look for a plumber, Home Advisor pops up.  Looking for a real estate agent? Zillow pops up. And if you are looking for a Wedding DJ, you've got The Knot, Weddingwire, and Gigmasters popping up.  The entertainment you decide to hire for your wedding has got to be top notch and have a personality that completely meshes with you and your fiance. You are not going to find that "personality" on any listing website. How do you truly know what you are getting?  They say that the cream always rise to the top.  Well, in terms of wedding DJs, the best do rise to the top. You need to do your research. Your guests have travelled to Charleston from all the country, you need to hire the wedding DJ who truly cares about the success of your big day in the Holy City.

More often than not, I've noticed that the modern bride and groom of today are opting to keep the sound of their wedding "independent" of any other wedding that they have been to previously. What exactly does this mean? Well, for one, lots of today's brides and grooms are really into their music and are very interested in creating a soundtrack for their special day that's about "them".  They simply do not want the normal, boring wedding songs that have been overplayed and whose burnout factor are at maximum levels in 2019. The inspiration for today's episode of The Mike Bills Podcast came from the reminder of an anniversary of one of past clients. John & Megan were married at The Pavillion At Pepper Plantation back on November 30, 2013.  They were a very fun couple to work with and we actually still keep up with each other on Twitter 6 years later. It was their Do Not Play List that provided the content for today's episode of The Mike Bills Podcast. As one of the top Charleston Wedding DJs. allowing my brides and grooms the latitude and freedom to create a Do Not Play List is one of the integral parts of the music planning process to ensure the sound is perfect for your most special day here in Charleston.  The most professional wedding DJs will always recommend a list of Do Not Play Songs. You'll want to read on, but I cannot be responsible should your ears begin when you listen to this week's episode.

Made Our Wedding Perfect

Before choosing Mike Bills as our wedding DJ, we looked at several companies and DJs and looked over the reviews for all of them. We chose Mike Bills because of the overwhelmingly great reviews he got and I am so glad we did! They were all spot on! Mike was great to work with, quick to respond, came to our rehearsal to do a run through with us.

Professional and Creative

Mike was kind, courteous, professional, and creative! We thoroughly enjoyed working with him for our destination wedding at Folly Beach. We gave Mike minimal guidance and he caught on to our "style" quickly and efficiently. Our guests are still raving about the music selections, and how they were a great balance of new tracks and standards for everyone to enjoy.
