    CHARLESTON WEDDING DJ

All over my wedding DJ blog, I've put a lot of emphasis on Charleston brides and grooms choosing their first dance song. I've published all sorts of ideas ranging from the style of your first dance to different genre choices for that very special moment of your day. While the first dance song is still probably one of the single most important songs of your big day, your last song of the night needs to be looked at equally as much.  Your last song of the night needs some love and attention too.  You will probably notice that your wedding day has flown by. It's gone by so fast that you probably won't want it to end, so at the end of the night you'll become flooded with all sorts of emotion.  If you have done your due diligence and hired one of the best Charleston Wedding DJs, you most likely will be having the time of your life on this day and won't want it to end. You might even be tempted to ask your DJ just a wee bit longer. Be sure to discuss with your DJ how you'd like your night to end.  If you have not began to give your last dance song any thought, you'll want to read on to get some great ideas on how to end the night.

Part of creating the best and most memorable soundtrack for your Charleston wedding and all the guests you are inviting is making sure that all the parts of your big day are well-thought out and organized. From your wedding ceremony (if you should hire a DJ for this) to your wedding reception, I always tell my couples that since it's "their" day, and that they should make the music about "them". Your cocktail hour is an integral part of your wedding day and the right music for that time is a huge part of setting the vibe for the rest of your wedding day. While I let my clients know that this portion of their day has numerous options in terms of musical genre and feels, the vibe for a cocktail hour should be "feel-good" and relaxed, pleasant and smooth. After getting the big business done (your wedding ceremony) to make you a Mr & Mrs), your cocktail hour music should promote a chill vibe that allows you and your guests to relax and socialize with one another at some of the most beautiful wedding venues in Charleston.

Since the inception of Mike Bills Entertainment, it's been my goal as one of the top wedding DJs in Charleston to help construct an amazing soundtrack and mix of music that is tailored to each wedding, private party or event with their likes and dislikes.  When you give each couple the 100% latitude and "say-so" about what they would like to hear at their Charleston wedding, something truly amazing begins to happen. People have fun, and that "fun" creates  indelible, lasting images that you and your guests will remember for a very long time.  While it's certainly my goal to make each and every wedding or event completely about the guests and the bride and groom, there are actually quite a few songs that continue to be some of the hottest and most popular requests at Charleston weddings. You'll want to read on to see some of the 40 most popular Charleston wedding music standards still on the request lists today, and what will probably be for many years to come.

It's Labor Day Weekend. The fall wedding season has officially begun in Charleston, but I was lucky enough to be off this weekend. Since it's the unofficial end of summer and everyone out there in Charleston is heading out to the beach for one last time, I figured I would make it a fun post for Day 1 of this long weekend.  Being one of Charleston's top 80s DJs, I have blogged quite a bit about my love of 80s music. But you know in all my blogging, I have neglected to speak about the vast amount of One Hit Wonders we saw back during the decade of decadence. The One Hit Wonders of the 80s spanned across multiple genres ranging from rock to pop to R&B and hip-hop.  When it comes to creating the playlist for your Charleston wedding or event, you really can't go wrong when you throw in some of the greatest hits of the 80s.

August 29, 1958: Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana and would become one of the most successful entertainers in the history of all recorded music. From the late 1970s through the end of the millenium, Michael Jackson put together a string of albums that dominated the pop & R&B charts filling dance floors all over the world. He'd go on to have the title "King Of Pop" bestowed upon him. It's hard to believe we just passed the 9 year mark of his untimely death on June 25, 2009. Despite his passing, his vast contributions to music continue today and his music is still in very high demand by wedding guests and is played by DJs all over Charleston during weddings and private events. They are hopefully very few and far between, but there are actually some brides and grooms who like to leave the Michael Jackson off their Charleston wedding playlists.  I don't really have an explanation for this, other than some brides and grooms like to totally give their weddings a different sound.

When news broke this week that the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin was nearing death, I began to do some preliminary research on her legendary music career. When I need accurate information on an artist's body of work, I always consult with my copy of Joel Whitburn's Billboard Book Of Top 40 Hits. He published his first book back in 1970 and has provided one of the most accurate records of an artist's music and their associated chart history. I received the news on the passing of Aretha Franklin just as I was uploading my salute to the Queen Of Pop (Madonna) on her 60th birthday. I spent most of the rest of the day yesterday digesting a ton of social media posts celebrating the life and legacy of Aretha Franklin.  Where do I begin? She was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame back in 1987. She was a musical icon with a voice that was so full of soul, and odds are we are not likely to ever see someone with her talents ever again. She had 20 Number 1 songs and over 50 of her songs made it into the Top 10.  As one of the best Charleston wedding DJs, I can tell you that Aretha Franklin still sees a lot of rotation at weddings and events all around the Lowcountry.  You'll want to read on to get a nice dose of the soulful music of Aretha Franklin.

You better believe that there was no way I was going to let Madonna's 60th birthday pass by without any acknowledgement. Madonna's music has been part of my life since at least 1983, when I was in elementary school and heard "Borderline" for the first time. Since I had older sisters, MTV was always on when our parents were out and I caught all the early classic Madonna videos. It's hard to put into words how much of an impact Madonna has had on pop music over the past 35 years. She is very worthy of her title of "Queen Of Pop", with over 300 million + albums sold, and she has also been proclaimed the greatest solo act of all time. During my radio career when I hosted my 80s Request shows, Madonna was always in the Top 5 of 80s artists receiving requests for airplay by my listeners. As one of the best Charleston wedding DJs, I can tell you that Madonna is still in heavy rotation at weddings all around town. "Holiday" is still a favorite song to throw on when brides and their bridesmaids want to get a little crazy and get things started on the dance floor early in the evening. The Shep Pettibone Remix of "Like A Prayer"  is a personal favorite of mine for later in the evenings at Charleston weddings when it's on the request list and you'd like to keep guests on the dance floor.. From the 80s to now, Madonna's music has evolved and she continues to reinvent herself. In this special post to honor her on her 60th birthday, I take a special look at an (A-Z) listing of how her career started back in the 80s along with some other of my favorite tracks too. Enjoy this salute back on one of the greatest women in music ever.

Time now for a little Charleston wedding playlist refresher when it comes to the all-important and very special mother-son dance. In case you missed my previous posts about the mother-son dance, I made mention that this is actually a rare occasion that the groom's mother gets into the spotlight at Charleston weddings. This dance was not a tradition like the Father / Daughter dance, and has grown in popularity over the past several years. This dance, along with the father-daughter dance are often difficult choices that sometimes can take many weeks to decide upon.  While the groom and his mother can certainly plan to do a nice and fancy choreographed dance, it's been my experience that these songs for these special dances are more about "lyrics" and actually have a deeper meaning than fancy dance moves. The groom and his mother should think about their relationship when selecting their song. Maybe it was a song that you remember as a child as you were growing up? It's those types of songs that can conjure up some very deep emotions during your wedding reception and may cause tears to fall by your guests.

I know what you are probably saying. This is just another attempt for Mike to talk more about the music of the 80s again. Well, quoting those famous Billy Joel lyrics, "you may be right" :) One of my specialties as a professional wedding DJ here in Charleston is 80s music. Earlier this year, I had uploaded a few blog posts about some of the music from 1988. I still owe you Part 3 of that series, but today's post explores the rather stark comparison in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 from this time in 1988 versus the same time here in 2018. Mike Bills Entertainment is always on top of NEW music that is just charting and beginning to really take off on the Billboard charts.  My company is on the pulse of what's hot on the Top 40, rap, country, as well as the rock charts.  In researching the latest Billboard charts for this week here in 2018, approximately 70% of the artists who occupied the first ten spots were rap artists, while 20% were pop, and one artist could simply be put into the R&B category. When we time warp back to 1988, you'll see much more diversity in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer.  You'll want to read on as the difference in the music charts between now and 30 years ago is pretty extreme.

It's no secret that when you book your wedding DJ with Mike Bills Entertainment, you are given 100% complete control over the music to be played at your Charleston wedding. It's been my experience over the years that this is the best recipe for an amazing wedding reception. There are some couples who are VERY protective of their playlist. Maybe they saw a disaster of a wedding DJ at their friend's wedding last year? Maybe they are REALLY into their music and want lasting memories for many years to come. But then there are some couples who might not think they have the time to select all their music, so as a result just picked select genres of music or maybe just a handful of songs. Then, they let their DJ use their professional judgement on what songs to "fill in the blanks" with. Making sure that we have the best soundtrack for your big day, and that it will be able to have you and your guests up on the dance floor is no easy task, and involves quite a bit of leg work and analysis, as well as consultation behind the scenes. Ok, the tone of this blog post is about to get funny, so you'll definitely want to read on.

Before choosing Mike Bills as our wedding DJ, we looked at several companies and DJs and looked over the reviews for all of them. We chose Mike Bills because of the overwhelmingly great reviews he got and I am so glad we did! They were all spot on! Mike was great to work with, quick to respond, came to our rehearsal to do a run through with us.

Professional and Creative

Mike was kind, courteous, professional, and creative! We thoroughly enjoyed working with him for our destination wedding at Folly Beach. We gave Mike minimal guidance and he caught on to our "style" quickly and efficiently. Our guests are still raving about the music selections, and how they were a great balance of new tracks and standards for everyone to enjoy.
