"Alone" | Heart
We'll kick off this playlist of romantic songs with a song that still makes me melt. When this song was released in the summer of 1987, Ann Wilson had nothing left to prove when it came to being one of the greatest women of rock vocalists.  Her voice goes to maximum heights in this song. The burning question at the time was "How Do I Get You Alone?"  This song reached Number 1 back in the summer of 1987 and is one of the top power ballads of the 80s.

"Right Here Waiting" | Richard Marx
I saw Richard Marx on Twitter the other day joking about how he goes to the dentists office to hear his music.  Back in the 80s, he wrote some of the most romantic songs that you heard on a lot (and still hear) on adult contemporary radio stations around America.  You can find him featured on one of my most popular posts about 80s Soft Rock For Dinner At Charleston Weddings Released in the summer of 1989, you can find this song on his Repeat Offender.  The song would eventually reach Number 1 on the Hot 100.

"Hungry Eyes" | Eric Carmen
During the latter part of the summer of 1987,  a movie would be released that would become one of the most iconic American movies of all time. It featured a soundtrack with a lot of classic 50s and 60s songs, but also this song from Eric Carmen. Released during the movies run in the fall of 1987, the song would become a Top 5 hit on the Hot 100 charts, and make women of all ages melt when they watched Dirty Dancing.

"Set The Night To Music" | Roberta Flack & Maxi Priest
Originally written by Diane Warren back in the 80s, this song was originally recorded by Starship back in 1987. In 1991, Roberta Flack recorded the song alongside Maxi Priest.  The song would reach Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and #2 on the adult contemporary charts.

"Baby Come To Me" | Patti Austin & James Ingram
The song was originally released in 1981 and did not go to far on the Billboard charts until it was used in the soap opera General Hospital. After being used in General Hospital for some love scenes, it was re-released in the fall of 1982, only to make it to Number 1 in early 1983.

"Perfect" | Ed Sheeran
Not that Ed Sheeran needs any money, but he could easily create a Valentine's Day compilation CD and it would probably go platinum within a few days.  Released in the fall of 2017, this song needs no nice description on why it's on my Valentine's Day selections. It's got over 1.8 billion views on You Tube, and it's still in heavy rotation at Charleston weddings for first dances.

"Always & Forever" | Luther Vandross
The late Luther Vandross released an album in 1994 called "Songs". The album featured all covers ranging from "Endless Love" (with Mariah Carey), "Love The One You're With", " and this song, originally recorded by Heatwave in 1978.  The song would make it all the way to #25 on the adult contemporary charts.

"All Of Me" | John Legend
John Legend dedicated this masterpiece of a song to his beautiful wife, Chrissy Teigen.  Looking back to the Charleston wedding seasons of 2014, it was one of the most popular new songs used for first dances.  The song would hit Number 1 on the Hot 100 charts in May of 2014.

"All You Need Is Love" | The Beatles
This Beatles classic was released as a 7 inch single back in the summer of 1967. Like all their other releases, the song would reach Number 1. The song would also be included on their American version of the album "Magical Mystery Tour" in the fall of 1967.

"I Knew I Loved You" | Savage Garden
Savage Garden ended the 90s by having the Number 1 song on the adult contemporary charts and would begin the new millenium with this song still at the top of the charts.  It has been showing up on a lot of  dinner playlists at Charleston weddings in recent years.

"Vision Of Love" | Mariah Carey
I still remember this like it was yesterday. The beginning of Mariah Carey's career. Through out the entire summer of 1990,  you couldn't turn the radio on without hearing this song. By August of 1990, the song would reach Number 1 and stay at the top for 4 weeks.

"Let's Get It On" | Marvin Gaye
What a beautiful thought for your Valentine's Day here in Charleston. Some dinner. Some desert. Some wine. Maybe a little chocolate? And then time to get it on a little bit, or maybe a lot. Excuse me. Let's get this blog post back to being more PG :) This rather sultry song by the late Marvin Gaye was released in the latter part of August in 1973,  and would reach Number 1 on the soul LPs chart.

"Into The Mystic" | Van Morrison
One of my first choices for this post for a Van Morrison track was "Have I Told You Lately", which is totally beautiful, but I've used that song in many other posts, so I thought I would give some love to this classic.  You can find it on his Moondance album from 1970. You can also find the song on lots and lots of Charleston wedding playlists too. Take a listen down below.

"Your Body Is A Wonderland" | John Mayer
I remember it was the early part of 2003 and the radio station I was working at had this song in very heavy rotation.  The song was the second cut to hit the radio off his first album "Room For Squares".  It would go all the way to Number 3 on the Billboard Top 40 charts.

"Crazy For You" | Madonna
Maybe on Valentine's Day night, you'd like to keep it simple and do dinner at home and throw on a classic 80s flick?  Madonna appeared in the classic 80s movie "Vision Quest" as she sung this ballad from 1985.

"Don't Know Much" | Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville
One of the most beautiful 80s soft rock songs that I have featured on other posts on this blog. The song was released in September of 1989, and just before Christmas of that year, it would reach the top of the adult contemporary charts, as well as Number 2 on the Hot 100.

"There's A Light That Never Goes Out" | The Smiths
We'll shift gears a tad for this next song and move into the 80s alternative music category. This song was recorded back in the mid 80s, but was not released as a single until 1992.

"Love Of A Lifetime" | Firehouse
The late 80s and early 90s saw so many rock bands doing power ballads. As I write this post and listen to a snippit of this song, I am holding my Bic Lighter up like everyone did when one of these songs was performed in concert. "Love Of A Lifetime" would make it to the Top 5 in September of 1991.

"No Ordinary Love" | Sade
I'm not sure a romantic Valentine's Day would be complete without a little Sade. This song reminds me of a great post I did back in January of 2018 about some of the most sexy Sade songs The song was featured in the 1993 movie "Indecent Proposal" and as a result cracked the Top 20 on the adult contemporary charts.

"Making Memories Of Us" | Keith Urban
You'll probably notice that we are bouncing around different genres of music on this playlist. From soft rock to 80s power ballads to alternative, and some light country. The first version of this song was originally released by Tracy Byrd, but Keith Urban would record it for his 2004 album "Be Here".  His version would hit Number 1 on the country charts, and also cross over to the adult contemporary charts as a Top 5 hit. The song is definitely a popular song, sometimes for the wedding ceremony prelude, as well as for the dinner portion of the evening.

"You've Got The Love" | Florence & The Machine
Candi Staton originally released this song back in the latter part of 1986. Then, in 1991, the Source remixed the song. Florence & The Machine would then release it in 2009. "You Got The Love" would be the B side to Dog Days Are Over.

"Angel Eyes" | Jeff Healey Band
1989 was great year for beautiful love songs like this. The song was released in the summer of 1989 and would make it all the way to the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as Number 7 on the adult contemporary charts. Sadly, Jef Healey died from complications of cancer back in 2008.

"Love Me Tender" | Elvis Presley
If you are a fan of Norah Jones, she did an excellent cover of this song on the Princess Diaries Royal Engagement soundtrack. Elvis released this song back in September of 1956 and would go all the way to Number 1 on the Billboard and Cashbox charts. In addition to Norah Jones covering the song, Linda Ronstadt, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett were just a few of the others who recorded their version of this wonderful love song.

"Love Of My Life" | Queen
You know I've had Queen on the brain ever since the Bohemian Rhapsody movie came out.  This song was written for Freddie Mercury's ex fiancee Mary Austin. You can find the song on the album "A Night At The Opera"

"Waiting For A Girl Like You" | Foreigner
Foreigner started the 80s with release of their album "4".  "Waiting For A Girl Like You" was a huge departure from their 70s hard rock days.  The song would reach the Top 5 on the adult contemporary cahrts, as well as Number 1 on the Mainstream rock charts.

"Because I Love You (The Postman Song) | Stevie B
This was probably one of the big "engagement and proposal" songs for the 1990 holiday season.  The song would reach Number 1 on the Hot 100 in December of 1990 and would spend 2 weeks at the top of adult contemporary charts.

"The Look Of Love" | Dusty Springfield
Released in January of 1967, you can find this song on the popular James Bond movie soundtrack, Casino Royale.  Jazz singer and musician Diana Krall would do a cover of this song that I actually got to see a while back in concert when she came here to Charleston.

"Can't Help Falling In Love" | Haley Rinehart
You might remember Haley from the 10th season of American Idol. I actually did not remember her, but a recent bride wanted to use to her cover of the famous Elvis song as her bride processional song. It's a beautiful new version, so be sure to take a listen down below.

"Sex On Fire" | Kings Of Leon
One of the few uptempo songs on this list of Valentine's Day love songs.  Maybe throw this song on after dinner as you are Ubering back to your private place? ;)  It's hard to believe this song is now 10 years old. It reached Number 1 on the alternative charts back in the fall of 2008.

"I Get Weak" | Belinda Carlisle
"I Get Weak when I look in your eyes......" Of course you do, that's why you guys are together and are going out on Valentine's Day.  This song was released right after Valentine's Day 1988 on February 15 and would make it to Number 2 on the Hot 100.

"You And I Both" | Jason Mraz
Originally recorded in 2001, this would be the 3rd single to be released off Jason's debut record "Waiting For My Rocket To Come".

"Nothing Compares 2 U" | Sinead O'Connor
Prince originally wrote and recorded this song back in 1984, but his version would not be released until 1994. Sinead O' Connor's version would make it all the way to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It would also top the charts in numerous other countries like Belgium, France, Icleand, and Finland.

"Dreaming Of You" | Selena
The death of Selena might be one of the greatest tragedies in music history.  After her untimely death in 1995 and 1996, her songs were posthumously released.  "Dreaming Of You" would make it into the Top 10 on the adult contemporary charts.

One and Only" | Adele
"One And Only" was never released as a single, but you can find it as Track #9 on Adele's multi-platinum selling album "21".

"Kiss Me Slowly" | Parachute
University of Virginia grads know Parachute. Parachute has it's roots in Charlottesville, Virginia and released their first record in 2009. "Kiss Me Slowly" would reach the Top 20 on the Adult pop charts in 2011.
